Specialist support for pumping stations adopted through a NAV

New Appointments and Variations, commonly known as NAVs, provide developers with an alternative route for the adoption and long-term operation of water and wastewater infrastructure.

Where a development includes a pumping station, that can introduce a different set of technical, operational and approval considerations from those associated with the incumbent water authority.

Advantage Pumping Solutions works with developers, consultants, groundworkers and NAV organisations to help coordinate those requirements from the early design stages through to installation, commissioning and handover.

Our experience across the NAV sector helps project teams understand what is required, reduce unnecessary technical friction and develop pumping station infrastructure with the proposed adopting organisation in mind from the outset.

Why NAV requirements need to be considered early

NAVs can have their own technical standards, submission requirements, inspection processes and operational preferences.

Depending on the organisation and the development, those requirements may influence:

  • - Hydraulic design
  • - Pump selection
  • - Wet well and chamber layouts
  • - Rising main design
  • - Electrical requirements
  • - Controls and telemetry
  • - Access and maintenance
  • - Emergency storage
  • - Technical documentation
  • - Commissioning and handover

For some NAVs, detailed pumping station guidance is published and well established.

For others, requirements may need to be agreed on a project-specific basis.

Either way, the adoption route should be understood before the pumping station design is treated as fixed.

Advantage experience across NAV-led developments

Advantage has more than 25 years of specialist pumping station experience and established relationships across the water authority and NAV sector.

That experience allows our team to support developers and consultants with:

Early feasibility and technical advice

Hydraulic calculations

Pump and rising main selection

Mechanical and electrical design

Review against NAV requirements

Technical submission information

Pumping station layouts

Equipment manufacture and supply

Installation and commissioning

Telemetry coordination

Handover and adoption support

Rather than treating the pumping station as a standalone equipment package, we help develop it as part of the wider wastewater infrastructure strategy.

How does NAV adoption differ from water authority adoption?

The underlying objective is similar: the finished pumping station needs to be suitable for long-term ownership, operation and maintenance.

The difference is that individual NAVs can apply their own technical, commercial and operational requirements, and these can vary between organisations.

That makes early coordination especially important.

The pumping station should be designed around the proposed adoption route rather than assuming that requirements from one NAV or water authority will automatically apply to another.

Why involve Advantage early?

Advantage can work directly with the developer, consultant, groundworker and adopting organisation to help coordinate the technical detail.

That can reduce the amount of information being passed backwards and forwards between different parties and help resolve important design questions before they become construction issues.

For developers already managing a complex project team, that can make the pumping station element much easier to control.

Not sure which NAV route applies to your development?

If the adopting organisation is still being considered, Advantage can help review the pumping station requirements and support the project team as the adoption strategy develops.
