Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase 2
Customer: BAM Nuttall
Project Name & Location: Burley Mills, Wyther Lane, Apperley Bridge
Scope: Full MEICA design, installation, commissioning & handover
Application: Flood alleviation infrastructure (River Aire Phase 2)
Advantage Pumping Solutions delivered three permanent pumping stations forming part of a major flood defence scheme designed to protect Leeds from extreme flood events and future climate impact.
The Challenge
This was not a standard pumping station project.
Each installation formed part of a live, interconnected flood defence system, where failure is not an option.
Key challenges included:
- Delivering across multiple live construction zones
- Integrating into civil infrastructure delivered by others
- Designing systems to operate at defined flood event thresholds
- Coordinating with multiple stakeholders and approval bodies
Maintaining programme alignment within a phased infrastructure scheme.
The Solution
End-to-End MEICA Responsibility
Advantage took full ownership of the mechanical and electrical scope across all three sites — from design development through to commissioning and handover.
This reduced interface risk and ensured consistent delivery across all locations.
Engineered for Long-Term Performance
Each pumping station was designed beyond minimum compliance, focusing on reliability, resilience, and maintainability.
Key features included:
- Duty/standby pump configurations for operational resilience
- Ultrasonic level control with independent float switch back-up
- Engineered wet well benching to prevent sediment build-up
- DN400/DN450 ductile iron pipework for durability
- Integrated lifting and safe access systems
System design was based on defined discharge requirements of ~250 litres per second, ensuring performance during peak flood conditions.
Control & Telemetry Integration
With multiple stakeholders involved, control and monitoring requirements varied across sites.
Advantage ensured:
- Control panels designed for multi-stakeholder telemetry integration
- Provision for authority-specific systems without redesign
- Control philosophy aligned to monitoring, alarms, and operational control
All systems incorporated Form 4 MCC panels, VSDs, and PLC control architecture.
Stakeholder Coordination
Delivery required ongoing technical alignment with:
- Leeds City Council
- Environment Agency
- Yorkshire Water
By coordinating across all parties, Advantage ensured compliance, operability, and long-term asset performance.
Programme Delivery
Working within live construction environments and shared access zones, Advantage coordinated closely with BAM Nuttall and other trades to:
- Maintain programme timelines
- Manage installation sequencing
- Reduce delays and rework
The Outcome
- All three pumping stations were successfully delivered and integrated into the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase 2.The completed systems provide:
- Reliable pumping capacity during extreme flood events
- Resilient control and monitoring across stakeholders
- Infrastructure designed for long-term performance and maintenance
